5 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Stay Requests

November 20th, 2012 | Posted by Fred in Tips - (0 Comments)

A few Startup Stay members have been asking us lately about the availability of host entrepreneurs, since the number of replies vary. Let me share with you a few good tips to maximise every one of your “Stay Requests”.

There are internal and external points to take into account:

Internal (what we can control)

1. First, let’s get out of the way the most obvious one: Have a fully complete Startup Stay profile (with a profile picture, info about you, your startup, itineraries, links to social networks, etc) You could have the best tactics in mind but, if your potential host checks out your profile and finds it incomplete or nothing interesting at all, guess what’s going to happen?

2. Take the time to browse the desired profiles when seeking accommodation. Anyone can offer a “place to crash“. However, the value comes when you stay with an interesting entrepreneur. This way, you maximise your networking time, expand your business network while also learning great stuff from your host.

3. Use the ”Stay Request” button when seeking accommodation (not the “Send a Message” one). Otherwise you lower your chances of getting replies. We have implemented recently the “Reply rate“, so you have a better idea who is more likely to get back to you now (Messages through the “Send a Message” button do not impact the member’s reply rate)

Hello, my name is Philipp Albrecht, founder of websafari, an Austrian-based web company. This summer I have been to the Greek islands for a 12-day working holiday. I wanted to use this time to get off the operational stuff, meditate and think about the future.

One morning, I found an email in my inbox titled “Startup Stay Invite” while I was sitting in a coffee shop next to the sea. I was so thrilled by the idea that I signed up and decided to shorten my “holidays” for 3 days to visit Athens and its startup community. I immediately contacted a few local Startup Stay members. The feedback was great: I received 3 offers to stay and 6 to meet for coffee. I was stunned. From my experience with other platforms, I expected lower interest and replies. (more…)

Startup Stay is all about helping entrepreneurs to meet face to face worldwide. We are currently supporting many cool projects (facilitating connections and accommodation with local Startup Stay members) such as Startup World (Led by Hermione Way from The Next Web) and TechBritain.

Recently, we’ve also partnered with Shoestring Media, one of Australia’s largest startup/entrepreneur focused websites, to work on “Leeap”, our most ambitious project so far:

Pawel and Phil

Every now and then we get emails from Startup Stay entrepreneurs sharing their great experiences.

It’s a nice opportunity for us to share this with other members through our blog and also with other entrepreneurs that haven’t joined Startup Stay yet :-)

Host entrepreneur

Philip Faulconer, based in San Francisco, is the President of Propeller Development, Inc: a cloud development company specializing in salesforce.com development and AWS.

Philip said: “Since Startup Stay is a new service, I wasn’t sure what to expect in hosting other than the opportunity to connect with someone who’s coming to San Francisco and interested in entrepreneurship. My company is focused on Amazon Web Services and on Salesforce.com consulting here in San Francisco, but we are also launching several new products so we have a startup mentality. San Francisco is a hotbed of innovation so it’s not hard to meet a lot of great people doing interesting startups, but the type of connection you have through hosting is different from meeting for coffee or at a meetup.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to have several extended conversations about our business, share advice, but importantly – to learn about another person’s life experiences in a meaningful way. We shared more than business talk, we also got into family, culture, music, food and some of the great things about our lives.

I think Startup Stay is a great platform for people to connect with the shared value of entrepreneurship as a foundation for the connection.

Guest entrepreneur

renaud_visage

Last week, Renaud Visage, CTO and cofounder of Eventbrite (Global online service that people use to create, share, and join any event imaginable) paid entrepreneurs in  TechHub London a quick visit so, I booked a few minutes with him. We talked about his company,  Startup Stay and also his startup story.

If you type his full name in Google you’ll find Renaud’s own site. He’s a talented photographer. I encourage you to have a look at his pics. Many of them are amazing!

So here we go again,  I pulled my Flip Cam and recorded a short interview for our community. Enjoy! (more…)

Roberto Gluck is an Argentinian entrepreneur and software engineer, co-founder of The Social Radio (listen to your tweets, lists and trending topics mixed with the music you love!). He spent a few days in the US going to tech conferences and networking.

When he was about to leave New Orleans he reached out to us to help him find a local entrepreneur in San Francisco.
We then connected Roberto (left in the photo) with Francisco “Wiki” Chaves, an experienced UI/UX designer at Lemon (App that captures your receipts so you can throw away the paper and visualise your money in a whole new way).

The experience went really well.

Wiki said: ”We had three great days. We spoke about his app, Lemon and many other geek things ”. (more…)

business travel experience buenos aires

We’re only a few days away from launch and I’m happy to have already completed two Startup Stay travel experiences: the first one in Riga, Latvia and now, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
We have also manually connected (since the platform is not live yet) a couple of entrepreneurs to stay with startups in San Francisco and Belfast so they could get a taste of the experience before launch.

I’m originally from Argentina, so I recently went there just a few days to visit my family and take care of personal stuff. However, I was located an hour and a half away from the city centre. I reached out to a few startups and finally, Federico Vega from Mercado Transporte, very kindly offered to host me for two nights to avoid the long journeys. My idea was to learn more about the startup scene, promote Startup Stay and meet local entrepreneurs and investors.

Federico lives in an 11th-floor-apartment with his girlfriend, Diana Sanchez from Madrid (co-founder of Mercado Transporte). The view of the city was outstanding! (more…)

matt barrie

A couple of days ago I was told that
Matt Barrie, CEO and founder of Freelancer.com (The world’s largest outsourcing and crowdsourcing marketplace for small business) was coming to TechHub.

The cool thing about this informal visit is that he did not give a group talk but conducted instead, individual one-to-one session with each TechHub member that wanted to chat about anything. I signed up immediately.

I only had a few minutes so first, we discussed a few things about Startup Stay and then I pulled my Flip Cam and recorded a short interview for our community. Enjoy! (more…)

Problems entrepreneurs face when they travel

After coming up with the Startup Stay idea, Facundo and I put together a quick survey to learn more about the different problems that entrepreneurs in startups face when they travel and other angles necessary to build the platform.

We collected information from 115 entrepreneurs in 27 countries. Here they go:
